چکیده

1 2 This paper presents statistics of Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs) above Antarctica from 3 June to October 2006 using observations from the CALIOP spaceborne lidar, part of the 4 CALIPSO mission. Synoptic-scale changes in their geographic and temporal distribution 5 are documented on a weekly basis and correlated with temperature fields. A very high 6 spatial and temporal variability tends to contradict the hypothesis that PSCs are mostly 7 created via slow processes mainly governed by large-scale temperature changes. Linear 8 depolarization ratios reveal strongly typed PSCs with distinct characteristics (implying dif-9 ferent microphysics), but most of the time a unique cloud composition cannot be singled 10 out. A West/East imbalance is observed in the depolarization distribution, symptomatic of 11 microphysical disparities. A classification based on depolarization and scattering ratios 12 suggests more than 60% of mixed PSCs, followed by more than 20% of STS, and a 13 roughly equal concentration of NAT-based and pure ice PSCs (~8%). Up to the beginning 14 of August, STS PSCs experience a steady decrease in concentration correlated with an 15 increase in ice-based PSCs ; this tendency gets reversed after the first week of August.

Characterization of Polar Stratospheric Clouds with Space-Borne Lidar: CALIPSO and the 2006 Antarctic Season

Abstract. The role of polar stratospheric clouds in polar ozone loss has been well documented. The CALIPSO satellite mission offers a new opportunity to characterize PSCs on spatial and temporal scales previously impossible. A PSC detection algorithm based on a single wavelength threshold approach has been developed for CALIPSO. The method appears to accurately detect PSCs of all opacities, inc...

Polar stratospheric cloud visualization: volume reconstruction from intersecting curvilinear cross sections

The CALIPSO satellite launched by NASA in 2006 uses an on-board lidar instrument to measure the vertical distribution of clouds and aerosols along the orbital path. This satellite’s dense vertical sampling of the atmosphere provides previously unavailable information about the altitude and composition of clouds, including the polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) that play an important role in the ...

Quasi-Lagrangian Measurements of Nitric Acid Trihydrate Formation Over Antarctica

In 2010, the joint French-United States Concordiasi project released 19 long-duration superpressure balloons from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Four of these balloons carried a gondola with particle counters and temperature sensors to measure polar stratospheric clouds. One gondola spent 5 days at stable temperatures between equilibrium temperatures for nitric acid trihydrate (NAT) and for super...

Characterization of AVHRR global cloud detection sensitivity based on CALIPSO-CALIOP cloud optical thickness information: demonstration of results based on the CM SAF CLARA-A2 climate data record

The sensitivity in detecting thin clouds of the cloud screening method being used in the CM SAF cloud, albedo and surface radiation data set from AVHRR data (CLARA-A2) cloud climate data record (CDR) has been evaluated using cloud information from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) onboard the CALIPSO satellite. The sensitivity, including its global variation, has bee...

On the linkage between tropospheric and Polar Stratospheric clouds in the Arctic as observed by space–borne lidar

The type of Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) as well as their temporal and spatial extent are important for the occurrence of heterogeneous reactions in the polar stratosphere. The formation of PSCs depends strongly on temperature. However, the mechanisms of the formation of solid PSCs are still poorly understood. Recent satellite studies of Antarctic PSCs have shown that their formation can b...
